WhatsApp has started rolling out a major update to its calling infrastructure, allowing group calls with up to 32 participants across multiple devices simultaneously — phones, tablets, and desktop apps.
The feature, which has been in beta testing since April, is now reaching users globally on both Android and iOS, with the desktop apps receiving the update through a server-side switch.
How It Works

Users can join a group call from their phone and seamlessly switch to their laptop or tablet mid-call without dropping. Each participant can join from up to 4 linked devices, and the call host can see all participants across all device types.
The feature uses WhatsApp proprietary end-to-end encryption protocol extended to multi-device scenarios, meaning all 32 participants remain encrypted regardless of device.
India Impact
India is WhatsApp largest market with over 500 million users. The multi-device calling feature is particularly significant for Indian businesses, educators, and families who rely on WhatsApp for group communication. The 32-participant limit matches Zoom free tier and exceeds Google Meet free limit of 100 participants (but with time restrictions).
