Amazon has officially expanded testing of its next-generation Alexa+ voice assistant to India, bringing dedicated Hindi language support to millions of potential users. The move represents the first major international rollout of Alexa+ since its initial launch in the United States earlier this year.

What Alexa+ Brings to India

Alexa+ is Amazon's generative AI-powered upgrade to its original voice assistant. Unlike the previous version, Alexa+ can maintain context across conversations, understand follow-up questions without requiring the wake word, and perform multi-step tasks. For Indian users, the Hindi language support goes beyond simple translation — Alexa+ has been trained on Hindi dialects and regional variations, including Hinglish code-switching (mixing Hindi and English in the same sentence), which is the most common speech pattern among urban Indian users.

The Smart Home Opportunity in India

India's smart home market is projected to reach $6.5 billion by 2027, with voice assistants serving as the primary interface for smart home control. Amazon already holds a significant lead in India's smart speaker market through its existing Echo devices. The Alexa+ upgrade could accelerate adoption by removing language barriers that have limited smart home penetration beyond English-speaking households. Amazon has partnered with Indian smart home brands including Syska, Wipro, and Crompton to ensure compatibility with Alexa+.

Competitive Landscape

The launch positions Alexa+ against Google Assistant (which already supports Hindi) and Apple's Siri (which added Hindi in 2024). However, Alexa+'s generative AI capabilities — including the ability to remember user preferences, control multiple devices in sequence, and provide contextual information — give it a significant edge over competitors. Google has not yet announced a Gemini-powered upgrade for its Assistant in India, leaving a window of opportunity for Amazon.

Privacy and Data Considerations for Indian Users

Alexa+ processes significantly more data than its predecessor to power its AI features, raising privacy considerations. Amazon has stated that voice recordings are encrypted and users can delete their history at any time. India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 requires explicit consent for data processing, and Amazon has confirmed that Alexa+ will comply fully with Indian data protection laws, with all Hindi language data processed through servers located within India.

Availability and Pricing

The Alexa+ trial in India is currently invite-only for existing Echo users who opt into the testing programme. A full public rollout is expected in the third quarter of 2026. Pricing for the Alexa+ subscription in India has not been announced but is expected to be around ₹199 per month based on US pricing adjusted for the Indian market. Existing Echo devices will support the upgrade through a firmware update, though newer devices with better microphones and processors will deliver the optimal experience.
